“The Electric Co.” and “The Ocean” are impressive exercises in enthusiasm and textural wash for teenagers to attempt. rip in history, and in 1993 it still made Johnny Rotten-Lydon surly, and “Out of Control” sounds like the title - it still did in 2001 when I saw them close their Elevation tour in Miami. “I Will Follow” is the best Public Image Ltd. I’d say U2 were the Stones in 19 if “Vertigo” and “City of Blinding Lights” weren’t more ubiquitous than “Mixed Emotions” or “You Got Me Rocking.” But I bet they earn more in recurrent royalties than the Athens quartet with whom they got paired for most of their professional lives. “With or Without You,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “One,” and a couple other hits, including 2005’s “City of Blinding Lights,” persist as recurrents in various media, including grocery stores. Like R.E.M., whom I’ll get to presently, U2 exist without being revered, perhaps more so.
